Missing teeth – even missing a single tooth – can not only negatively impact your self-esteem and affect the way you talk and your ability to chew food; it can also affect your overall oral health. If you choose to simply live without one or more teeth, the other teeth in your mouth will shift in place, trying to fill in the gap left behind by the missing teeth. That can throw your bite off, which can result in uneven wearing of your teeth and even problems with your jaw. For all these reasons, replacing one or more missing teeth is important. Fortunately for our San Antonio, Texas area dental patients, Dr. Williamson offers one of the best and most permanent methods for doing just that – dental implants.
What You Should Know about Dental Implants
An implant consists of a metal rod (typically made of surgical grade titanium) that is inserted into the jawbone of the patient, in the exact location of the missing tooth. A portion of the implant is left above the surface of the gum line, which serves as the base for a temporary crown that Dr. Williamson will place to protect the dental implant. After some time passes – typically a few months – the metal fuses to the bone tissue, creating what is essentially an artificial tooth root. Once that is complete, Dr. Williamson will remove the temporary crown and replace it with a permanent crown. The result is a replacement tooth that is as close to a natural tooth as dental technology will allow.
The Advantages of Dental Implants
Although the entire dental implant procedure takes much longer than some other tooth replacement options, most patients agree that it’s definitely worth it. Here are some of the advantages of dental implants:
- Implants are a permanent solution. Because the titanium rod is fused to the bone, and the crown affixed to the top of the implant is not removable, implants are considered to be permanent solutions to missing teeth.
- Caring for implants is simple. Instead of requiring any special cleaning methods, patients with implants can simply brush and floss as they normally would.
- Implants look just like natural teeth. Because the shade of the crown can be exactly matched to other natural teeth, no one will ever know that you have an implant.
- Impacts are durable and long-lasting. Unlike some other tooth replacement options, implants are extremely durable. Better still, if properly cared for, implants can last for the lifetime of the patient.
All-on-Four Dental Implants
There’s no doubt that dental implant technology is a remarkable advancement in dentistry. And perhaps nowhere is this more obvious than with All-on-Four dental implants. Put very simply, All-on-Four implants are one type of implant-supported dentures. In this procedure, Dr. Williamson begins by extracting the patient’s teeth (when that’s necessary), surgically inserting four small implants on the top and bottom of the patient’s mouth, attaching a crown to the top of each implant, and ultimately fitting the patient with a set of dentures that attach to the implants. The result is a complete set of replacement teeth that are extremely durable and fit securely inside the patient’s mouth. And the entire process can be completed by Dr. Williamson right here in our office – including a bone graft procedure for patients who require that.
